A FIRST GUIDE TO SPACE CREATURES

Author: Faiz Kermani

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Faiz Kermani,

Material: paperback

Summary: Ambassador Ticklydung, having spent his career traveling the galaxies, has created the Space Creature Sanctuary to protect many of the endangered and rare species he's encountered. This is an illustrated guidebook that explains each of the creatures housed there. Each of the profiles is juse one page, making this a great selection for reluctant readers.

Type of Reading: independent reading, transitional reader, read aloud, illustrated chapter

Recommended Age: read together: 6 to 9; read yourself: 9 to 12

Interest Level: 6 to 10

Age of Child: Read with and by a 9-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter much preferred looking at the pictures and having us read than trying to read the book herself. That said, she would periodically pick it up from the table to look at the various creatures and always had a comment to share.

Adult Reader Reaction: This is a cute book. I can easily see upper-elementary readers (especially boys) interested in the topic, and I love the potential it has for inspiring kids to create their own creatures, both with visuals and text descriptions.

Pros: Limited text and colorful images will capture the imaginations of young readers.

Cons: None, really.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a fun book to share, but it isn't one that kids come back to for a story.

If You Liked This Book, Try: MY ALIEN PENFRIEND   HUNGRY; A Novel   SPACEHEADZ (Spaceheadz Book 1)

Educational Themes: This is a great primer for launching art and writing projects about creating "new" animals or creatures.

Notes: The Reading Tub reviewed the book in conjunction with an Author Showcase feature.

Literary Categories: Fiction - fantasy, adventure, easy reader
