Summary: Paul doesn't want to go to bed. No one else did, so why should he? Then the transformation began. He became a little monster. Would Mom and Dad be able to get him to sleep? This is a bedtime story written in Spanish and English.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, learning to read, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 6; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 2 to 6
Reading Level: 1.8
Age of Child: Read by a 9-year-old-girl
Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter was unusually vocal about her dislike for this one. She thought Paul was cute and was happy at first that it was a book with words she could read, but then as the story went on she decided it was too easy and the story was "for babies."
Adult Reader Reaction: This one may have hit too close to home for my daughter. Still, I can see the disconnect between the age of the audience for whom the book is written and the audience who can read it themselves. As a bilingual book, though, I think it is an excellent choice when you're practicing or learning a different language. Overall, I was disappointed in the message.
Pros: Parents and young children will see their own house in this story about a little boy who is tired but doesn't want to go to bed. The illustrations help exaggerate the story in fun ways for kids.
Cons: I understand why the parents were comforting, but there was no acknowledgment that tantrums aren't acceptable. In fact, Dad's reaction at the end only reinforces that its okay.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is one you'll want to preview before sharing with your kids to see if it has the message you want.
Educational Themes: The lesson in this one is clear ... there is a right and a wrong way to go to bed.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
