Young Reader Reaction: We selected this because our daughter has recently expressed an interest in learning French. As we read, she was more interested in repeating the French words than exploring the pictures and learning about France.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is an excellent primer, particularly if you are taking your preschool or elementary-aged child to France. The book is effectively laid out, using each of the locations (Paris, Loire Valley, Cote d'Azur) as the context for introducing French (days of the week, color, numbers, common phrases, food).
Pros: This picture book offers an engaging story while simultaneously including a few lessons in basic French vocabulary.
Cons: There is a glossary, pronunciation, and translation guide at the back. It would be helpful to have a parent's note up front (maybe a pre-trip postcard) so that adult readers who are unfamiliar with French (or are rusty) know where to look for help).
