BONJOUR L'ENFANT! A CHILD'S TOUR OF FRANCE

Author: Danna Troncatty Leahy

Illustrator: Gabhor Utomo

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: AuthorHouse,

Material: hard cover

Summary: Michael, Elizabeth and their parents are visiting France this summer. Beginning with the plane ride across the Atlantic, and at all of the stops along the way, the children introduce the sights, sounds, and vocabulary of France. This picture book tour introduces kids to France and French words.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 9

Interest Level: 3 to 8

Reading Level: 2.9

Age of Child: Read with a 7-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: We selected this because our daughter has recently expressed an interest in learning French. As we read, she was more interested in repeating the French words than exploring the pictures and learning about France.

Adult Reader Reaction: This is an excellent primer, particularly if you are taking your preschool or elementary-aged child to France. The book is effectively laid out, using each of the locations (Paris, Loire Valley, Cote d'Azur) as the context for introducing French (days of the week, color, numbers, common phrases, food).

Pros: This picture book offers an engaging story while simultaneously including a few lessons in basic French vocabulary.

Cons: There is a glossary, pronunciation, and translation guide at the back. It would be helpful to have a parent's note up front (maybe a pre-trip postcard) so that adult readers who are unfamiliar with French (or are rusty) know where to look for help).

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is an engaging, helpful book if you are interested in introducing French or visiting France.

Educational Themes: This is an engaging book for introducing young children to the world around them. There are basic lessons in French, descriptions of famous places, and opportunities to learn French geography. Bring the book alive with a trip to a local bakery or art museum.

Notes: Flesch Kincaid 2.9
