Summary: A farmer named Chuck and his barnyard friends strike up a band. Each animal gets to pick their instrument. The cat is not happy with any instruments, and decides instead to use some earmuffs so he can take a nap while they all play their music. This is a rhyimg story set on the farm.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, learning to read, remedial reader

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 2 to 6

Age of Child: Read with four-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: My daughter liked the rhyming and laughed at seeing all the different animals playing instruments. It wasn't a book she wanted to read again; she said it was silly.

Adult Reader Reaction: I liked the pictures the most, but also liked the creative rhyming.

Pros: The pictures in this book are incredible, and the story is creative.

Cons: Some may think there is too much rhyming.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. Although the pictures invite you into the book I don’t feel it is a classic story. It is just a cute story to read once or twice. I would be sure a library had it in their collection.

Educational Themes: This is a book where you can build on the lyrical elements of the story. You can teach rhythm and rhyming, as well as talk about different musical instruments.

Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, animal stories, music, humor
