DID THE AARDVARKS SAY

Author: Claudia Coburn

Illustrator: Angela Hoard

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Purfect Promises Publishing, 2004

Material: hard cover

Summary: Page after page you'll find questions about how Noah loaded all the animals on the Ark. This is an alphabet book that works to get children thinking.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 6 to 8

Age of Child: Read with 3´┐½-year-old child.

Young Reader Reaction: Our preschooler enjoyed the letter play, as well as animal identification. The rhyming scheme kept him/her guessing.

Adult Reader Reaction: I found this book strange, because the title had nothing to do with the story. While it is a cute concept, the rhyming questions were completely random.

Pros: The animals will keep a toddler or preschooler's attention.

Cons: The animal-shaped letters can make for a tough initial read.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a cute book, but it lacks longevity.

Educational Themes: Although there are references to Noah and the Ark, this is essentially a book for learning your ABCs.

Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, animal stories, religion
