Adult Reader Reaction: The story is typical of most of the fantasy books for preteens ... except that those were written by adults. There is lots of action and it is well written.
Pros: This is an adventure for preteens that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a well-written story, and kids will enjoy it; but it probably isn't a "classic" that you'll keep forever.
Educational Themes: The story itself offers its own lessons. It is specifically aimed at a "tweener" audience, which guarantees multiple re-reads and lots of chatter on the internet.
