“Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.” More
Publisher: The Bowen Press, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2009
Material: hard cover
Summary: This is a simple book that answers all of a young child's questions: do you love me? do you need me? would you leave me? am I special? etc. This is a colorful picture book with simple text and illustrations in a Q-and-A format.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 5 to 7
Interest Level: 2 to 5
Age of Child: Read with and by a 7-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: When she read the title, our daughter instantly tried to set the text to the tune "Do You Love Me?" by the Contours. She also liked taking turns reading where she asked the questions and we read the parent part.
Adult Reader Reaction: This book is meant for a younger audience, but sharing the reading with our daughter made it special, too. We laughed and giggled our way through the book lots of times. Given the bright colors and cute characters, I hope there is a board book version of this!
Pros: Brightly colored pages, two computer-characters, and simple text (in large type) will engage toddler and early elementary audiences alike.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. Especially if you have a toddler. This is a book they'll be drawn to because of the colors. It would make a nice gift for a mom-to-be.
