"A smaller percentage of 17 year olds saw adults reading in their homes in 1999 than in 1984."
Summary: Both the inside mouse and the outside mouse have their sleeping places, their homes, and their adventures. Follow them both as they trace the inside and outside routes to each other's homes. This is a story that will remind you of the City Mouse-Country Mouse tale.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 7
Age of Child: Read by a 6-year-old boy.
Young Reader Reaction: My son liked the book and how each mouse did the same thing but in a different location. He especially liked picking out details in the illustrations. He didn't mind reading it once, but didn't want to read it again. The story didn’t really grab his attention but he liked finding the story within the pictures.
Adult Reader Reaction: I liked the book, but it doesn't rank as one of my favorites. The illustrations are beautiful and wonderfully detailed, but I felt the story jumped around too much trying to compare the inside and outside mice.
Pros: The illustrations are beautiful and the book is great for a beginning reader.
Cons: The story might be confusing if your child is just beginning to read on his own as it jumps from Inside to Outside and back again. That said, the sentences are almost identical so the repetition in the reading is good.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a nice story and the illustrations make it fun to read.
Educational Themes: The illustrations make it easy to explore the story and make comparisons of the two environments. The first time through, as you're getting ready to move from Inside to Outside, ask your child to predict what the differences would be.
