Summary: Jack Rabbit has a new toy. It's a box ... and it talks. Jack is having fun playing with Silly Toy, whose name is really Zack. Jack quickly learns that Zack isn't the only surprise in that box! This is an easy reader that is presented in comic strip style.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, learning to read, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8
Interest Level: 4 to 8
Reading Level: 0.9
Age of Child: Read by a 7-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: From the moment she saw this book, our daughter insisted on trying to read it herself. For almost two weeks now she has selected this as one of the books she wants to read to us each night. We've also heard her reading it in the shadow of the night light.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is a fun way to present early reader content. The comic strip format adds "extra" illustrations mute the see-Jane-run sentences of most easy readers. There are lots of sound alikes (Jack, Zack, Mack) and vocabulary repetition that help young readers, but the presentation and the action in the story engage readers much more effectively.
Pros: Humor, lots of action, and simple sentences combine in this highly effective easy reader.
Cons: Zack is funny, but can be sarcastic in his tone. Some of his double entendre (word play) seems geared more toward adult humor.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is an easy reader that young readers will return to ... unlike many of those stilted books they bring home from school. There is a Cat in the Hat element to the book that young readers will recognize.
