Publisher: Crossway Books,

Material: hard cover

Summary: A family of orphans learns they will be adopted by the King. They all begin to get ready by working on a talent they have so the king will accept them. The youngest is friendly with people and helpful to strangers, but feels she has no real talent to show the King when he comes. She finds that by being herself she is the one ready for the King when he comes. The King explains all he really wants is someone to spend time with him and love him. This is a story about unconditional love.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, easy reader, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9

Interest Level: 5 to 8

Age of Child: Read with 4-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: My daughter liked the story, especially how she got to live with the king, even though she was ignored by her siblings. She didn't understand why the girl's brothers and sisters had no time to show her how to do things.

Adult Reader Reaction: This is a good book to teach kids about kindness and taking time to be with family and friends. It reminds us that we should always be kind to each other and be willing to teach anyone who asks for help with something we know how to do. I was surprised she liked the book, as the story had no real action to it.

Pros: This is a story that teaches kids an important lesson about kindness.

Cons: Not a fun or easily flowing book for children. It felt more like it was written for adults but in a story book form.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a children's book for adults.
