Children, ages 2 to 3, who have been read to several times a day, did substantially better in kindergarten than youngs... More
Summary: Each page has a short rhyme about an animal, and three questions to ask the children to respond to, in both words and actions. The questions usually get the child to imagine they are the animal and to act like the animal in some way (for example, shooing away bees). Each page had a child dressed up in an animal costume to go along with the rhyme. This picture book encourages kids to act out animals while you read.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 6; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 6
Age of Child: Read with boys 3 and 5 years old.
Young Reader Reaction: My 3-year-old liked the animals, but did not “get” the questions. My 5-year-old probably would have been more responsive had the book been read in his preschool classroom. We read it once, but my sons were not interested in reading it or acting out the animals again.
Adult Reader Reaction: This book is probably BEST in a group setting (in a preschool or kindergarten). I did not like the book. The rhymes were not well written. The word choice was awkward in an attempt to force the rhyme, and the message that did not add any value to the book other than to fill space.
Pros: This is a series of books that will get kids up and moving, or, if you already have an active listener, give them something to do while you read and ask questions.
Cons: The awkward/forced rhyme really detract from the book. This is not a book you'd read one-on-one with your child.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a book that's suited for a classroom or group environment.
