Summary: Abraham Lincoln is on his way to Washington, DC. Will he be president? No one knows yet. Not even his son Willie who has joined him on this train ride from Chicago. Through this story, we follow Lincoln's journey from Illinois to the White House and through the Civil War through the eyes of Willie (11) and Tad (7). This is an illustrated historical fiction novel for independent readers.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, independent reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 8 to 12; read yourself: 9 and up
Interest Level: 9 to 12
Reading Level: 3.5
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is an incredibly well-researched, well-written story. As an adult I knew most of the facts, but hearing it from the Lincoln boys' perspective added a lot to the history.
Pros: Beautiful illustrations, exceptional writing, short chapters and history told by their "peers" will engage kids in understanding the Lincoln family and their public and private lives.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is a slim volume that would make a wonderful gift and/or an addition to a collector's shelf.
