"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart." More
Summary: This is a series of books for siblings. In this one, the older child struggles to deal with the attention they have lost, and redirects his activities to being HELPFUL with the new baby, teaching the baby how to play or eat, and finding enjoyment from his new role as older sibling. These books point out the differences between being an older sibling vs. being a baby. For instance, they dress side by side, and you see how proud the toddler is to be able to do it himself and not need help! This board book describes the relationship between a young child and their new baby sister or brother (the illustrations are generic enough to go either way). This is a board book series to help kids adjust to and understand their feelings about new siblings.

Young Reader Reaction: I picked out this book, but my son also asked us to read it, too. He liked the bright colors and the dialogue they inspired about how wonderful it is that he is a big brother and so helpful.
Adult Reader Reaction: I LOVED these books. They are thoughtfully designed for the child who has a new younger sibling. They really help show concepts to help a child adjust to being an older sibling and sharing mommy and daddy's time with the new baby. The illustrations give the child confidence and show him there are BENEFITS to no longer being the baby. These books open the discussion for you to have with your child.
Note: I did not actually read the text to my children, as it leaves much to be desired. It asks questions that cannot be answered by the child or by the parent, so it really doesn't add to the story or help out at all. It was very awkward. HOWEVER, I read through it once (without the child) and it does help ME, the parent, figure out what is going on in the story, so I can create my own discussion with my child that fits our needs better.
The pictures are truly wonderful, and pretty much tell the story all by themselves, so any story you make up will be an awesome one! Also, very important, towards the end of each book, we see baby asleep for a nap and NOW the child gets some one-on-one time with mommy/daddy. A nice way of showing them Yes, sweetie, have some patience, because there is hope for that attention you crave!
Pros: Wonderful pictures and a book sized for a big brother or sister's handling make this a great tool for helping a child adjust to having a new baby in the house. This book gives my child the pride and confidence to let go of trying to be the baby, to be a grown up kid instead!
Cons: The text is not helpful.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! Absolutely yes buy this one! It is probably better for a toddler who has a new baby in the family, maybe as a "bringing baby home" present.
Educational Themes: This is a great book to share to talk with your child - and give him or her a chance to talk about - their feelings about having a new baby brother/sister.
