Type of Reading: family reading, playtime reading, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 7; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 8
Reading Level: 1.9
Age of Child: First read with child at 23 months.
Young Reader Reaction: Initially closed the book after page 2. During subsequent readings, would check out the page, but then wander away.
Adult Reader Reaction: Surprised by the reaction. The story is engaging, and not unlike other flights of fancy. Not sure why this didn't go over well.
Pros: The black/white/red illustrations and fold-out pages are a nice change. The short sentences and fanciful theme are short enough to keep a toddler's attention and also help beginning readers.
Cons: The museum-quality pages require adult supervision when reading.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow it. We expected a popular book to be loved. It isn't at the moment.
