I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. More

OUR SOLAR SYSTEM (Revised Edition)

Author: Seymour Simon

Illustrator: Seymour Simon

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Harper, an Imprint of HarperCollins Pubishers, 2014 (Revised Edition)

Material: hard cover

Summary: Incredible photos fill the pages of this nonfiction picture book. First learn about the origins of the Milky Way, then dig into what scientists have discovered about the sun; the eight planets and their moons; and other celestial bodies like asteroids and comets. This photo-illustrated book was written in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution.

Recommended Age: Read together: 8 and Up; read yourself: 11 and Up

Interest Level: 8 to 13

Reading Level: 6.4

Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.

Adult Reader Reaction: The photographs are amazing. I loved opening the book to any page and then starting to read. There is a ton of information here. The layout and certain words in bold suggest an elementary audience, but the reading level is middle grade.

Pros: Explore this book any way you choose. From planets and stars, to comets and asteroids, readers will get a "bird's eye" view of the solar system.

Cons: The glossary is disappointing. It is crammed onto a page with the Index. The black pages are "unnumbered," so using the index can get frustrating for some readers.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a beautiful book and a highly recommended read. It is, however, more suitable for public and school libraries.

Educational Themes: There is more to this book than just information about the planets. Readers interested in space exploration will find lots of details about NASA's work in exploring our solar system (distances, mission names, et al).

Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
