A study of the best research on dropout prevention shows that a single event rarely causes a child to drop out ... More
Summary: Two parents dream about a baby, and the next night, they receive a call that their baby had been born. They flew to a faraway place to meet their baby girl and bring her home. Together, that first day, they celebrated being a family. For families who have traveled to beyond their home to adopt a child, this story puts it all together nicely.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 8; read yourself: 8 to 10
Interest Level: 3 to 10
Reading Level: 3.2
Age of Child: Started reading with 2½-year-old child.
Young Reader Reaction: This took a couple readings to generate interest. Now it is an every nap/every night read, and s/he is always cooing over the baby, asking about all the characters and pointing to the moon & stars. S/He recognized events (like going outside at night to see the moon) and claiming that they are "just like me."
Adult Reader Reaction: The bright, highly stylized illustrations exude happiness. It is a rather simplistic presentation of adoption, but a nice starter story for young listeners. It's easy for them to see themselves in it.
Pros: This is a good book for talking about adoption and introducing words that your child will learn more about as s/he grows up.
Cons: The story won't fit all adoption scenarios. If you want a story that parallels yours, but you didn't travel to someplace tropical or you adopted a boy, this may not be the book you're looking for.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. Even if the scenario isn't exactly yours, the illustrations are wonderful and the pages exude the happiness of becoming a family.
