PHILADELPHIA CHICKENS: A TOO-ILLOGICAL ZOOLOGICAL MUSICAL REVIEW

Author: Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford

Illustrator: Sandra Boynton

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Workman Publishing Compan, 2002

Material: hard cover

Summary: The animals have gotten into a groove. The aardvarks, cows, dinosaurs, chickens and their friends serenade you with with big band, blues, jazz, jump-rope tunes … and a lullaby or two. This is a CD with a song-book that accompanies it.

Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 6; read yourself: 7 to 9

Interest Level: 2 to 8

Age of Child: Child started listening at nearly 3 years old.

Young Reader Reaction: Instant encores! Our toddler loves dancing along, and now has started reciting some of the songs. After two months it is still AT LEAST a twice-daily request. Now, two years later, it's a 'comfort book' when we've had a tough day.

Adult Reader Reaction: We are as thrilled with the music as she is. And it's a good thing, because the CD goes EVERYWHERE we go. We hope to find more kids music like it.

Pros: The music is sophisticated enough for grown-up ears, but fun enough to share some silly dances, too.

Cons: Beware! You may find yourself in the grocery store humming "Cows, we're remarkable cows." The tunes will follow you even when the music stops.

Borrow or Buy: Buy! The book is a must to catch all of the words, and the music is must-have for any child's collection.

If You Liked This Book, Try: BARNYARD DANCE!   IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT (A WEE SING BOOK)   MURPHY'S SAFETY SONGS

Educational Themes: The great thing about this book is that it reminds all of us that it's okay to be silly.

Literary Categories: Fiction - music, animal characters, picture book, humor
