Summary: The book begins with the familiar nursery rhyme "Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around." Then builds into the story of a teddy bear waiting on the shelf for his wish to come true: a child to play with and hug him. This is a bilingual picture book where one half is in English and the other in Chinese. It comes with a CD, too.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 6
Reading Level: 2.1
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: When I opened the book, I expected this to be *just* the nursery rhyme. So I was tickled when a story began to unfold. The text is simply presented and done in such a way that this could be an easy reader when kids are starting to learn to read. The illustrations are wonderful and remind me of Ezra Jack Keats' The Snowy Day.
Pros: Colorful, patchwork illustrations engage young readers in this new version of a traditional nursery rhyme.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This would be a lovely gift paired with a teddy bear. For families who have adopted a baby from China, this could be an especially nice gift.
Educational Themes: This is a story to be shared just for the fun of reading together. That said, there are several points in the story where you can ask about how the boy or teddy bear feel, as there is a range of emotions [curious, sad, worried, happy, loved, et al.]
Notes: The author donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
