Summary: It starts and ends with a fishing pole. As Benny heads to the lake to fish he runs into Big Foot ... and lots of other characters, most of whom don't like him. Thanks to his discovery of pirate treasure, Benny will probably have enough money to buy a NEW fishing pole! It is a long, adventured-filled journey, but one Benny wouldn't change for anything. This is a chapter book filled with boyish humor, both in text and image.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, independent reading, read aloud book, dormant reader, remedial reader
Recommended Age: read together: 8 to 10; read yourself: 9 to 13
Interest Level: 8 and up
Reading Level: 4
Age of Child: Read by an 8-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: Potty humor ... it had her laughing and forever coming in to tell us the "joke." Our daughter must have read this book cover to cover at least 5 times this summer. She is the one who showed us that the story came full circle with the fishing poles!
Adult Reader Reaction: Ugh. More silly bathroom humor (King Butt instead of King Tut), pirates, talking animals, and the booger man. Nothing over the top or completely gross, just typical and predictable. Thank goodness Benny is an affable character. Although we were quickly bored with the book, the intended reader was not, and that's what counts.
Pros: This is the perfect selection for emergent readers. The simple black/white illustrations offer visual humor; the pages usually have just a sentence or two, and the chapters are short. It is predictable elementary humor ... but it keeps them turning the page.
Cons: There is nothing over the top, but at a point way back in kindergarten potty humor lost its zing!
