Summary: As Ben the Blue pirate was walking on the sand thinking about his ship, he happened upon a beautiful golden creature: a Griffin. Actually, THE Griffin! and he had a plan to help. With the ship readied to sail, Greg and Roderick were ready to find more gold and jewels. But Ben didn't want treasure, he wanted to sail to Acrooacree. Can the Griffin help him? This is the third book in this illustrated pirate adventure series for pre-teens.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 6 to 10; read yourself 9 to 12
Interest Level: 6 to 12
Age of Child: Shared with a 6-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter loves mermaids, so an island with Mer-people was too much to resist. The magical Griffin-of-the-Rock and his gifts also added to the suspense and enjoyment.
Adult Reader Reaction: Like the first story, there are more events to drive the plot. The addition of a mystical creature complements the story and helps to balance the strong personalities of the pirates.
Pros: This illustrated adventure brings together traditional pirate lore (searching for treasure and mermaids), as well as some Greek mythology.
Cons: None, really.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a fun pirate story, but not one that you are likely to go back to more than just a few times.
Educational Themes: The story introduces ideas that are historically linked with stories of the sea: legends and mystical beings. The book offers enough information to launch independent research for other fictional or non-fictional sea tales. It might also be fun to research islands that might fit the pirates' destinations.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book series, pirates, adventure, fantasy
