Summary: A young girl has everything ready for school: her clothes are laid out, her backpack is ready - Mom even fixed her favorite breakfast. But she has lots of butterflies. Can't she wait until tomorrow to go to school? This is a picture book that walks children through the night before school and offers a twist on the concept of getting ready for their first day of Kindergarten.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 7; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 6
Age of Child: Started reading with child nearly 6 years old.
Young Reader Reaction: Our soon-to-be Kindergartner (who herself is quite nervous) was amazed that a "big kid" would be nervous about school. We have read this book several times and expect that we'll have a bunch more requests between now and when school begins next week.
Adult Reader Reaction: At first we were confused by the "age" of the Kindergartner in the story. It wasn't long, though, that we realized that she is the Kindergarten teacher!
Pros: This book will ease everyone's mind. Every Kindergartner will immediately take comfort in the idea that their teacher is probably just as nervous as they are!
Cons: None, really. The illustrations are good, but don't really add a "wow" factor that could put the story over the top.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. For a child entering school, whether it's play school, preschool or Kindergarten, this could easily become the equivalent of comfort food! They will want to have the story over and over. The added benefit is that the vocabulary is such that it is perfect for an emerging reader (level 1), too.
