Summary: Five puppies describe the things they like to do and invite the reader to play along, too. This is a book for exploring textures.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 6 to 8
Interest Level: 0 to 3
Age of Child: started reading at 9 months
Young Reader Reaction: S/He squealed with the turn of each page, loved touching the various materials and pointing to objects (balls, noses, slipper).
Adult Reader Reaction: With one statement/question per page, there isn't much to read. The photos of the puppies (playing ball, eating a slipper, etc.) are a nice change from illustrations. In addition to discerning textures, there was plenty of other things: colors, numbers, size.
Pros: This was a must-read for nearly a year. The pages are VERY sturdy, as are the materials used to provide texture…and they took lots of wear and tear. Lots of opportunity to go beyond just the stated activity.
Cons: None, really. The corners on the cover don’t withstand teething very well.
Educational Themes: There is plenty to learn from textures to colors to sizes to object identification and counting.
Literary Categories: Nonfiction - animal stories, picture book
