Summary: Each page of this board book has is either a cut out or a built up section on the page. Each page is an opposite of the image on the other side, but it fits into its companion page. This is an interactive board book to teach the concept of opposites.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 4 to 6
Interest Level: 2 to 4
Age of Child: Shared with a 1-year-old boy.
Young Reader Reaction: My son enjoyed the book and wanted to touch all the raised and indented pages. He pointed out the pictures that he liked.
Adult Reader Reaction: I enjoyed the sweet pictures and liked the opposites concept.
Pros: The pictures are adorable and offer a visually pleasing way to teach opposites. The book goes beyond the typical set of opposites you see in books for this age group.
Cons: Some of the opposites were a little strange, like caged and free. A few of the pictures were hard for little ones to understand (e.g., the one with the mole underground).
Borrow or Buy: Buy! This would be a good baby shower gift. Children would enjoy the pictures and texture from an early age and the concept of opposites would come later. It is a buy because it will grow with your child developmentally.
Educational Themes: Because of the variation of opposites, and the inclusion of more sophisticated concepts, this is a board book that will grow with your toddler well into preschool. For older children, it is an excellent study in how books are made.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
