YARD, A BABY UNPLUGGED BOOK

Author: John Hutton, MD

Illustrator: Andrea Kang

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Blue Manatee Press, ©2011

Material: board book

Summary: What can you find in your yard? What can you do outside? Rhymes and bright colors encourage kids to explore the world around them. This boardbook is part of the Baby Unplugged series.

Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 1 to 4; read yourself: 4 to 6

Interest Level: 1 to 3

Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.

Adult Reader Reaction: This is a fun, fun book. I love the bright colors, and the simplistic drawings are perfect for young eyes. The text helps create the action rather than the image.

Pros: Don't be surprised if your toddler wants to race outside after reading this book!

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy! These are books kids will want to "read" by themselves and they are perfectly sized for their hands.

Educational Themes: There are lots of ways to use this book. Start "doing" some of the things the kids do (like digging in the mud), and use the imagery for teaching vocabulary, from colors to objects (squirrels), and also early counting (how many butterflies do we see?).

Notes: The Reading Tub reviewed the book in conjunction with an Author Showcase feature.
