Summary: Many, many moons ago there was a curious bunny named Little Mookey. He loved learning. First he learned to paint, then to play the piano and sing. When he learned to sculpt, he decided to do something out of this world. So what did he do? He flew to the moon! If you look carefully, you might even see what Little Mookey did. This is a story about a little rabbit with a big dream.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, anytime reading, family reading, playtime reading, learning to read, easy reader, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Age of Child: Shared with nearly 7-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: We had several requests to read this book, even when we insisted on partner reading. Our daughter loved Little Mookey's name and his work of art at the end.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is a cute story. It is creative on several levels, and encourages kids to explore the arts beyond drawing to include sculpture. The author went a little overboard with the ellipses (...).
Pros: Kids will immediately relate to Little Mookey and his trip to the moon.
Cons: Little Mookey is an artist. It would have been better to explore performing arts in a different book and let various fine art media (maybe different painting styles) take center stage in this one.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow or buy. This could go either way. This is a simple story that kids will like hearing. The vocabulary and page set-up (lots of white space) are great for early readers (second grade).
Educational Themes: Pull out the paint and the clay and let your child be Little Mookey. Grab the jar of bubbles and let the kids imitate Little Mookey's efforts to play a bubble song. This is an easy book to bring to life. You can also head to a museum to explore various types of art. Just don't forget to go out to look at the moon.
