If only all of his friends could have as much fun as he is! Join Marco on his latest adventure traveling the world and introducing readers to animals and their habitats.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, playtime reading, learning to read, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 9; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 2.7
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is a cute story. Marco is a life-of-the-party kind of flamingo, up for any adventure. Spanish and English text are parallel on the page, making it easy to read both versions simultaneously. The illustrations are cute, but undercut the potential to educate kids about the world. For example, where is this jungle?
Pros: Young readers and listeners will love hanging out with Marco. From laughing with hyenas to rolling in the "mud" with the hippos, the story begs kids to join in the fun.
Cons: Marco refers to his "snow adventure" several times, so you may want to read that book first.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is fun to read and young kids will enjoy acting out some of the playful antics that Marco enjoys with the animals he meets.
Educational Themes: The illustrations introduce you to lots of animals who live in the jungle. Even though it lacks a sense of geography in the book itself, it does open the door to introduce kids to geography and the places where there are jungles.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
