“You cannot help someone get up a hill without getting closer to the top yourself.” More
Summary: The sun is setting and it is time for Wu to go to work. Today, maybe she'll be lucky. Maybe someone will take her home. She IS adopted. Her new family calls her Varly, and soon, she travels on a big plane to her new home - Washington, DC. This is the true story of a street puppy rescued in China and now living in the US.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together 4 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10
Interest Level: 4 to 9
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: Wu (and her wheelbarrow friends) snagged my heart right away. The story has its sad moments, but it has a happy ending. I knew nothing of street dogs or how dogs are viewed in China, so I also learned something.
Pros: Kids who love books about animals will fall in love with The Wheelbarrow Puppy Club. The story introduces them to a dog's life in other parts of the world.
Cons: None, really.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is not your average dog story, and it expands a young reader's knowledge of other cultures.
Educational Themes: The story is based on a real dog and her experiences in China. With younger children, there is an opportunity to introduce them to a culture they may not know. Ask older kids how they would tell the life story of their pets.
Notes: The Reading Tub® reviewed the book in conjunction with an Author Showcase feature. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
