Summary: Every Independence Day, the Doodles would gather for a picnic. SpitFire (the dog) was so excited, his tail knocked over a pail that doused the fireworks. With the help of a star-spangled cat, her friends, and some magic, Snickerdoodle saved the day. This is a tall tale in the classic tradition.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 7; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 2.6
Age of Child: Started reading with a 4-year-old child.
Young Reader Reaction: Our preschooler loves Snickerdoodle. S/He puts the CD in her player multiple times during the day to listen to the stories and dance to the music.
Adult Reader Reaction: Of the tall tales in this collection, this one seems the weakest. It is still a fun read … probably better in July than in March.
Pros: The stories are short and move quickly. There is plenty of action to keep young listeners at your side. The CD has plenty of Fourth-of-July type music to play for your own celebration.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, if you're looking for an individual title. The story and CD would be fun for the Fourth of July.
