Summary: Piccolo the tomcat enjoyed his life along the canals of Venice, and he certainly didn't want two young kittens slowing him down! When the kittens went missing, Piccolo began to realize that maybe he was wrong, and he DID have something to share. This is a picture book whose theme is fatherhood.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, elementary reader
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 8
Age of Child: Started reading with 4-year-old child.
Young Reader Reaction: S/He sat at quiet attention, taking in the whole story. This became a request for several days running.
Adult Reader Reaction: This story about fatherhood (in this case as a single parent) is a nice change … and an opportunity for Dad to take center stage! The venue--the canals of Venice--complemented the story well.
Pros: The illustrations are great, and offer wonderful segways from the text itself for "exploring" Venice. The themes are layered well; with the author keeping them light and enjoyable.
Borrow or Buy: This could go either way. If you're looking for a book to celebrate Dad's love, definitely pick this one for your library! If you're not sure about the adoption element, borrow it first.
