MEET FAIZ KERMANI

Imagine the headline: "Intergalactic Journey Launches from Treadmill!" In this case, we have a true story. During some of the more rote parts of his daily routine, author Faiz [pronounced (fāz)] Kermani let his attention wander. Invariably, his curiosity and imagination joined forces, and My Alien Penfriend was born.

Spend just a little time with Faiz, and you'll quickly see the roots of his story. The plot draws on some of his favorite things: all things related to outer space, a love of travel, and a passion for learning and being open to new things. Mix this together, and you can see how Faiz was able to piece together a world far different from his own ... yet still connected to it in a way that would engage children (and adults) to think - and explore - the world around him.

Writing children's fiction, though, is a relatively new hobby. Faiz is a PhD-qualified immunologist who is published widely on medical and healthcare issues. He is a frequent contributor to the consumer healthcare site http://www.nakedmedicine.com. He recently co-edited a medical textbook entitled Patient Compliance: Sweetening the Pill (Gower Publishing Limited, UK) which looks at how patients take their medicines.

Faiz is also a voracious reader, with a passion for learning. As a complement to the literacy work with his book, he is part of an educational charity called One Life for Education). The charity sets up partnerships between disadvantaged schools in developing countries and more fortunate schools in Europe.

Faiz currently lives in the UK with his wife, who is helping him translate My Alien Penfriend into French.
