At 15, Bob contracted encephalitis from a mosquito bite. The illness left him physically paralyzed, but spiritually determined. He focused on learning, and ultimately earned three degrees: a bachelor of science at Michigan State University, and master's degrees in speech communication at both the Universities of Michigan and Hawaii. After teaching at the University of Hawaii for 24 years, Bob retired to Florida, where he and his wife Betty have lived since 1989.

Bob was inspired to start writing rhyming stories for children when he began reminiscing about the animals and wild critters he had as pets as a youth on his grandfather’s farm.
