Summary: This is the story of the battle of Gettysburg July 1-4, 1863. The campaign changed the momentum of the war in favor of the Union. Losing momentum, General Lee and his staff realized that from this point on, the Confederacy needed to prepare itself for surrender. The nation, north and south, had the responsibility to restore the peace and begin to rebuild the nation. This is an illustrated history of the Battle of Gettysburg for pre-teens.

Big Kid Reaction: The reader will immediately recognize that there is something different about this book. Where other graphic novels may be mistaken for comic books, this is not the case with Gettysburg. The author meticulously recounts the narrative of the battle of Gettysburg. His drawings graphically depict the pain and suffering endured by the soldiers and citizens those early days of July 1863.
Pros: This book is a unique combination of accurate story telling complemented by graphic renditions that deeply move the reader

Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is an informative, enjoyable way to share ideas and events. Kids who need images to help them understand what they read will particularly benefit from this book.
Educational Themes: The educational value of the book is that it relates how painful and wasteful war can be. While the narration is clean and crisp, the drawings that accompany the narrative are sober and thought provoking. This is an excellent choice for dormant readers.
