Summary: When our narrator thinks of love, s/he thinks of something an animal in the zoo loves, too. Simple images, rhyming text and pages filled with hearts teach kids about what love means.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 5; read yourself: 5 to 8
Interest Level: 0 to 6
Reading Level: 1
Age of Child: Read by an 8-year-old girl.
Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter rushed through the reading (there is only one phrase on every 2-page spread) so that she could find all of the hearts the animals were made of.
Big Kid Reaction: This is a lovely, fun book. The colors are bright and the illustrations are simple enough to share with very young children, yet the heart-embedded animals make it engaging and fun for older children, too. This isn't billed as an easy reader, but it could definitely be one.
Pros: Beautiful, creative illustrations, simple pleasures, and rhyme make this a fun book to share and explore with children.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! In fact, buy two, because you'll want this for a friend who's having a baby.
Educational Themes: There is a lot you can do with this book, from object and color identification to talking about animals. The cover says there are more than 300 hearts int he book ... find and count them, either page by page or in total. The last page has all of the animals on a shelf, so you can test your reader's comprehension by asking about that animal's love.
