Title: COUNTING TO CHRISTMAS

Author: Nancy Tafuri

Illustrator: Nancy Tafuri

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Scholastic Press, ©1998

Material: hard cover

Summary: From December first until Christmas morning, there is something to do every day to help prepare for Christmas. This is a story that describes the activities associated with preparing for Christmas.

Type of Reading: family reading, any time reading, learning to read

Recommended Age: 2 to 5

Age of Child: started reading at 3 years old

Little Kid Reaction: It only took three readings before our preschooler started completing the sentences and describing the activities on each page. The repetition hasn't squashed his/her interest in reading it "again, Mommy."

Big Kid Reaction: What s/he loves quickly became tedious to us. Each page is a single sentence with a couple of verbs. It does have the right spirit, with Santa's arrival only a small part of the story's focus.

Pros: The print is over-sized so that it takes up a lot of the page. The activities are (largely) ones that a young child recognizes and can do him/herself.

Cons: This is a fairly simplistic representation of the holiday.

Borrow or Buy: Skip it. There are lots of great stories out there that deal with the excitement that comes with Christmas.

If You Liked This Book, Try: MERRY CHRISTMAS (A Sparkle 'N' Shimmer Book) , BARN CAT: A COUNTING BOOK , THE SNOWMAN (activity book)

Educational Themes: Each of the days is represented by ordinals, so counting and number recognition are possible.

Literary Categories: Fiction - holiday
