Title: WHY IS BLUE DOG BLUE? A BOOK OF COLORS

Author: George Rodrigues and Bruce Goldstone

Illustrator: George Rodrigues

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, Inc., 2002

Material: hard cover

Summary: The author invites the reader to explore all the colors his dog can be ... and why Blue Dog is blue. This is a picture book introducing a vast color palette.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, middle grade reader

Recommended Age: 7 to 12

Little Kid Reaction: Our preschooler loves this book and will thumb throught it independently. S/He especially likes some of the food-colored names.

Big Kid Reaction: This is fun to read (and we've read it A LOT)! We especially like how it expands a child's color palette into new directions, using bold and subtle shades to introduce new hues.

Pros: The story moves quickly, and Blue Dog is on every page. The "shifting" palette is a great way to introduce colors you won't find in other books for a younger target audience.

Borrow or Buy: Buy! This one will be around for a long time. First you'll read it to the kids, then they'll read it to themselves.

Educational Themes: In addition to introducing wonderful colors, the book offers actual visuals for children to "think outside the book." You can play lots of "what if X were Y color? games.
