Title: PATTERNS / LOS DISENOS

Author: Bev Schumacher

Illustrator: Bev Kirk

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Learning Props, LLC, ©2008

Material: hard cover

Summary: Each page of this book is represented by some type of pattern (dots, stripes, swirls), as well as pictures to show examples of the pattern (e.g., scarf, zebra, cinnamon roll). Each picture has the English and Spanish word for the picture written below it. This picture book allows you to undesrtand different types of patterns and develop your Spanish vocabulary.

Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 4 to 8

Interest Level: 3 to 6

Reading Level: 0.5

Age of Child: Read with two boys, 2 and 4 years old.

Little Kid Reaction: My 4-year-old liked identifying the objects. My 2-year-old liked the animals. They did learn a little bit about patterns.

Big Kid Reaction: I liked this book Okay. I liked that after introducing the patterns there were some pages with applications of what you learned. For example, which pattern is on each animal?

Pros: Colorful pictures and simple presentation will engage young children in exploring patterns. This is a bilingual book, so you can expand their vocabulary, too.

Cons: Several of the patterns were ambiguous, like wiggles and squiggles.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a book that can help kids with learning, but it does not have a story, and as such, has limited shelf life.

If You Liked This Book, Try: 30 MINUTE A DAY LEARNING SYSTEM: KINDERGARTEN , THE STEPHEN CARTWRIGHT 123 , ONE ODD DAY

Educational Themes: There are plenty of different pattern types to explore. I liked the pages with sqeuences (red leaf, green leaf, brown leaf, red leaf, green leaf, brown leaf ... what comes next?). They were a little advanced for my 4-year-old but would e great for a Kindergarden class.

Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book to the Reading Tub, Inc. This is an unsolicited donation.
