Big Kid Reaction: Authors, especially new writers, find it difficult to sustain the drama and pace necessary to engage the reader. To his credit, the author has successfully challenged the odds, and produced a sequel that matches the pace and excitement of the original.In Captured, the author has added a second gem to the reading treasure chest.
Pros: Readers will be on the edge of their seat as they get wrapped up in Ryan and Regan's adventures.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. Children who enjoy science fiction, adventures or mysteries would like this book. Read alikes for this book would be classics like Moby Dick or Treasure Island for adventure; and Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books for mystery. (I’m not sure if these are still ‘hip’-I loved them).
Educational Themes: This is a mystery/science fiction book. It is aimed at a tweener reading audience. The author hits the target. He demonstrates that he can tell an exciting story, one that will resonate with adolescent readers. He knows how to write stories that the middle grade audience If reading is something we want to encourage our children to do, they need to have interesting and exciting resources.
