Summary: The Cods (a fish family) share their story about why they return to Cape Cod for vacation year after year. Each year, their friends from all over the region come to see them. And when you see all the fun that they have, you'll want to visit the Cods, too. This picture book describes summer on Cape Cod with a rhyming story that is great for emergent readers.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, anytime reading, family reading, learning to read, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 2.6
Age of Child: Read with and by a nearly 8-year-old girl.
Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter giggled and laughed every time we shared this book. From the fish playing tennis to all the sea creatures watching movies on the beach she was caught up in the fun and silliness.
Big Kid Reaction: This is a delightful, fun read. Having read I Went to the Party in Kalamazoo together, I knew this would be equally fun. We've never been to Cape Cod, but the story seems to capture everything we know about it. The rhyming helps "raise" the story for kids becoming stronger readers (first grade and second grade).
Pros: Bright illustrations, fish with big lips, and lots of beach fun make this a great book to share no matter what season.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is a fun story you'll definitely read more than once!
Educational Themes: This is a great book for helping new reader develop vocabulary, but it's mostly a book to be enjoyed together.
Notes: The author donated a copy of this book to the Reading Tub, Inc. This is an unsolicited donation.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, travel, vacation, rhyming book
