A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MAMA (Step into Reading Series, a Step 2 Book)

Author: Nicole Lorian

Illustrator: J. P. Miller

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Random House, Inc.© 1984

Material: paperback

Summary: Little Rabbit befalls a series of adventures in his quest for the best present for his Mother's Birthday. It's a good story for young readers, and is designed to help children with their reading.

Type of Reading: family reading, playtime reading, learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 7; read yourself: 6 to 8

Interest Level: 5 to 8

Age of Child: started reading at 18 months

Young Reader Reaction: S/He took to the book immediately, and it was a regular request for about two weeks. It's not part of the every-day request list, but it is still there.

Adult Reader Reaction: Little Rabbit's mishaps are predictable, but the story is pleasant, and there's a happy ending! We expect it will be very popular once s/he starts reading to her/himself.

Pros: The story is reminiscent of a number of Aesop's fables and Peter Rabbit. The vocabulary is for new readers, so integrating the familiar tale(s) with "new" words builds confidence & skills.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow this one when your child is ready to start reading for him/herself.
