Publisher: Soundprints, an imprint of Trudy Corporation,
Material: hard cover
Summary: Nearly every letter of the alphabet is represented by a dinosaur. Look at their picture, learn a little bit about them, even sing a little song. Learn your alphabet AND all about dinosaurs with this picture book. It also includes a CD for reading along and music.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 8 to 10
Interest Level: 4 to 9
Age of Child: Shared with 6-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter spent hours each day over several days looking at the book and listening to the CD. Sometimes she wanted us to read with her, other times, she would thumb through the book with the narrator. Then there were times when she was content to have the CD on and play with her toys.
Adult Reader Reaction: Who knew there were so many dinosaurs? The illustrations are great, you can move at your own pace (some pictures got more questions than others). Actual details about dinosaurs are minimal in the book. You'll get more facts listening to the CD. The song that accompanies the reading it catchy ... after a couple days you'll find yourself humming it.
Pros: This picture book helps reinforce learning the alphabet with a beloved subject (dinosaurs) and catchy music.
Cons: It would have been nice to have some recommendations on other age-appropriate resources for learning more about dinosaurs. At barnesandnoble.com this is listed for kids 8 to 12. It seems pretty basic for that audience.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. If you have a young dinosaur fanatic, it's a buy (there's even a poster!)
Educational Themes: This is principally a book for learning the alphabet and reinforcing letter sounds. Still, there is a lot to explore looking at the illustrations of dinosaurs and listening to the additional facts on the CD. We like that you'll discover "new" dinosaurs to learn more about.
