Summary: Hop on the truck as the Firefighters run to the rescue of a buring house! From the first alarm bell to cleaning up the truck afterwards, we see EVERY STEP of the firefighters’ job! This board book introduces young kids to community helpers.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 5 to 7
Interest Level: 2 to 6
Reading Level: 0.6
Age of Child: Read with two boys, ages 18 months and 3 years old.
Young Reader Reaction: My boys LOVED the bright pictures and the lyrical rhymes! We read this a bunch.
Adult Reader Reaction: Yes, I loved the book. The pictures kept the attention of my 18m old and the rhymes were cute. They are great for helping kids develop language skills. My only concern is that the book had a LOT of pages for young attention spans, and I lost my 18m old’s attention about ¾ of the way through the book. My 3 year old was able to sit through the whole thing, but he has an unusually long attention span for his age, so I’m not certain all 3 year olds would be able to sit, and probably not 2 year olds either.
Pros: This wonderfully illustrated portrays firefighting in such a way as not to scare a child. The rhymes are cute and exciting.
Cons: The length may be too long for some kids. Be prepared to let them just "play" with the book.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! This is great for kids who like trucks, sirens, and are fascinated by what firefighters do. If you have a child who is into firefighters, try Fireman Small to the Rescue, a small and short board book. Then you can work up to this book.
Educational Themes: This one is all about firefighters and how they save people who are in trouble. The sentences and rhyme make this a good selection as an easy reader, too.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
