Publisher: Cartwheel Books, Scholastic, Inc.,

Material: hard cover

Summary: A boy named Buzz has a pet fly named Fly Guy. Buzz goes on a car trip with his parents, and even though Fly Guy is not allowed to come, he accidentally gets stuck in the car and goes along with the rest of the family. At each stop, the parents are worried about losing Fly Guy, but he's right there! However, on the way home, the parents get lost driving, and it's Fly Guy to the rescue! He flies high, finds the house, and directs the car home. Hooray for Fly Guy! This easy reader combines humor, sounds, and fun that boys (and girls) will love.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read, easy reader

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 6 to 8

Interest Level: 3 to 8

Reading Level: 1.4

Age of Child: Read with and by boys ages 2, 4 and 6.

Young Reader Reaction: My sons LOVED this book. My 5/6 year old loved READING it -- it was easy enough for him to be successful reading on his own, and I think he was proud to be able to accomplish the task. My 4 year old and 2 year old loved listening to the story, either read by me or by their older brother, and they loved the interesting illustrations. My 2-year-old enjoyed trying to find Fly Guy on the page.

Adult Reader Reaction: This is no mistaking that this is an early reader, based on the words in the book (both number of words per page and type of words on the page). I loved that my 6-year old was reading this book on his own and SO proud of it. He started off with another Fly Guy book that was football-themed, and that got him hooked on the character. It made him want to read even more! Fly Guy is very personable, even if he hangs out in the garbage! He's a good friend to Buzz, and vice-versa. A wonderful series for boys, in particular.

Pros: This series is great - for boys in particular. Despite living among the garbage, Fly Guy is an endearing friend. Fun characters combine with an interesting story to give developing readers lots of confidence.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy or borrow. If you have multiple children, you could buy the book and hand it down. Otherwise, check the series out of the library. It will be a book that will be read over and over again for a few months until your child moves on to more difficult reading. This is a GREAT resource for a classroom or remedial reading class.

Educational Themes: Although designed to help young kids build reading skills, there is still a great story about friendship ... and the perils that come with misjudging "someone." Fly Guy saves the day, even though the parents thought he would get lost. This is meant to entertain while promoting reading. The book is loosely divided into 3 chapters, so while it is not what is typically referred to as a "chapter book", it introduces the concept of dividing a book into sections.
