Young Reader Reaction: We liked this book! We have a hermit crab that we purchased in Nags Head, NC. I didn't know that stuff about it. We have another hermit crab we found in our yard. It was wearing a shell that used to be a necklace! It's a book we want to read again. I picked it up because I wanted to learn more about my hermit crab at home, and I really liked it.
Adult Reader Reaction: As a kid, I thought hermit crabs were cute, but we never got to bring one home because we wouldn't know how to care for them. The illustrations feed that need to give a "pet" a personality. You also get a good story and lots of facts, too.
Pros: This book has awesome "watercolor" pictures and great facts.
Cons: Student: I wanted to know what happened to the tree snail.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! According to our student reviewer, this should be in all beach rentals for kids to read.
Educational Themes: You can enjoy this book anytime, but it will be particularly fun and memorable before you go to the beach or as part of your beach reading. There are lots of great facts and good information.
