"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."
Summary: Three small dinosaurs are up and ready to play, but Mama Dinosaur is still asleep! They bounce and poke and prod and she just won't wake up! It takes rolling her down the hill into the bog before she gets up and starts to play back! Expect full-color pages with lots of orange and green! Expect full-color pages with lots of orange and green! This is an easy reader / short chapter book about three dinosaurs and their busy day.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, read aloud book, learning to read, easy reader, illustrated chapter
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 4 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 7
Reading Level: 0.5
Age of Child: Read with children ages 2 and 4.
Young Reader Reaction: My boys loved the book. My 2-year-old liked the action. My 4-and-a-half-year-old loved being able to actually read the words. With only three words per page, most were within the range of words he could figure out using letter sounds and simple blends. Both of them loved the last page when Mama starts chasing the dinosaur kids (in play, of course) -- "ROAR, ROAR, ROAR!"
Adult Reader Reaction: Dinosaurs + young boys = fun! No wonder my middle son was excited to read! The illustrations are fun, and I can totally relate to the mom wanting to sleep in just a few minutes more! I didn't think I would like the book, because the story is very simple. With only three words per page I thought it would be over before it began; but we spent some time on each page figuring out the words, and looking at the pictures. We were able to explore each page just the right amount. I was surprised that they were so interested in the book -- again, I thought it would go so quickly, that the kids wouldn't be able to "get in" to the story. But it ended up being fun.
Pros: A fun, rolling, rumbling action book with 3-4 words per page. This is colorful, with fun illustrations and plenty of action. Great action words for early readers at the WORD level.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. A fun book, but reading for the words is fun, but once explored, it loses some of it's excitement, and it's ready to move on to another book. However, for the die-hard dino-fan, this would be a wonderful gift!
Educational Themes: This is a fun way to engage toddlers with action. It helps preschoolers with early literacy skills for simple words, blends ("ch", "sh", "ck", "sl", "st", "str", "sn"), the "vowel-consonant-e" pattern.
