Interest Level: 7 to 10
Reading Level: 3
Age of Child: Read with nearly 7-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: We tried reading this book as partners, but it wasn't long before we needed to take over. Our daughter picked this book from the shelf, and was very interested (she asked lots of questions), but the insets and text-to-image ratio were beyond her.
Adult Reader Reaction: The photography is exceptional, and the information about volcanoes is fascinating. The disparity among books with the same "confident reader" label is frustrating, though my daughter seemed to just go with the flow.
Pros: Amazing photography and lots of facts will engage kids in studying these mountains that explode.
Cons: This is a pretty basic book. Although it is attractive to developing readers and they can (intellectually) process the content, you need to be a fairly strong independent reader to tackle this one.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a book best found at the library.
Educational Themes: Start with this book then grab a globe and start locating the places where volcanoes can be found.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
Literary Categories: Nonfiction - science, nature, easy reader series
