TOAST TO COUNTING (Toast to Baby Series)

Author: Sandra Gross

Illustrator: Leah Busch

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: blue manatee press, 2012

Material: board book

Summary: Toast, bacon, and pats of butter made from art glass teach counting from 1 to 5. As you turn the page, the piece of toast gains a topping: butter, eggs and other marks which turn out to be peanut butter and jelly. This concept board book introduces basic math and object identification.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 1 to 3; read yourself: 4 to 6

Interest Level: 1 to 3

Age of Child: Read with children ages 7 months and nearly 3 years old.

Young Reader Reaction: My children were indifferent to this book. There was not much to react to. Neither of us realized it was a counting book until we reached the final page which counted out each egg, pat of butter, smear of jelly, etc.

Adult Reader Reaction: Parent 1: I did not like this book. It did not make sense to watch a food product being added to eggs and then learn that it was peanut butter and jelly.

Parent 2: The photographs are interesting and the built-for-little-hands size make this book stand out. There isn't a story per se, which allows young readers the opportunity look at the pages however they choose.

Pros: Celebrate early counting with this creative presentation. Toddlers and preschool children will like being able to hold and "read" this book.

Cons: The artistry of the cut-glass images may be more appealing to parents than children.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a book that introduces very basic counting, and your child will grow out of.

Educational Themes: Toast to Counting introduces math with counting up to five, which is the "right amount" for toddlers. Without a story, there are more opportunities to ask questions about what your child sees on the page. Another option would be to pull out some toys / craft supplies so that you can make your own toast!

Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.

Literary Categories: Nonfiction - picture book, math, counting
