Lane's titles with Jon Scieszka include the Caldecott Honor winner The Stinky Cheese Man, and best sellers The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs; Math Curse; and Science Verse. Lane's other high profile titles include Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! by Dr. Seuss and Jack Prelutsky; The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip by George Saunders; and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

In 1996 Lane served as Conceptual Designer on the Disney film version of James and the Giant Peach. He also wrote and illustrated The Happy Hocky Family and The Happy Hocky Family Moves to the Country.

Lane studied art in college at the encouragement of his high school art teacher, and worked as a janitor at Disneyland to help pay for school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration, and moved to New York City, where he was hired to do illustrations for various publications including Time, Mother Jones, and Ms.

He and book designer Molly Leach live in the country, in the little town of Washington, CT.
