In 1996 Lane served as Conceptual Designer on the Disney film version of James and the Giant Peach. He also wrote and illustrated The Happy Hocky Family and The Happy Hocky Family Moves to the Country.

Lane studied art in college at the encouragement of his high school art teacher, and worked as a janitor at Disneyland to help pay for school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration, and moved to New York City, where he was hired to do illustrations for various publications including Time, Mother Jones, and Ms.
